Hej!
Sorry, but my norwegian is not that good.. :-)

In the summer 2013 I will be cycling from the Netherlands to the Nordkapp via the Baltic counties (http://lambchopeindhoven.wordpress.com/biking-2013/). In the past, I have found that if you don't plan an approximate route, it is easy to end up on main roads, and miss the nicest parts. I am putting together a planned route for the trip. The Norwegian part is here: http://lambchopeindhoven.wordpress.com/biking-2013/norway-2013/

I became very motivated to do this long trip after an amazing cycle trip I did in northern Norway this year where I cycled from Bodø to Nordkapp (http://lambchopeindhoven.wordpress.com/biking/bodo-nordkapp-norway-2012/). This year I will be cycling through Sweden before entering Norway in the far north. After reaching the Nordkapp, I hope to have time to visit some of the other peninsulas in the far north. Do you have any tips for up there? I heard that the road from Berlevåg to Båtsfjord is beautiful, and that Vardø and Vadsø are worth visiting.

I am keen to hear your ideas on this route, and any suggestions that you might have! :-)

Thanks for your help!!

Matthew

Hello. The road from Berlevåg to Båtsfjord is very nice in some parts, and it saddens me to say it is the 50 km part closest to Berlevåg. Anyway, the rest is easy as long as you dont have straight headwinds. Vardø an Vadsø is by no means very nice places, but you should take notice of the names Hamningberg and Ekkerøy.
It sounds like you are planning to go eastbound trough Varanger Peninsula. Are you doing the Hurtigruten to Berlevåg?

My routing inputs:
If you ride bike from Berlevåg to Båtsfjord, you can ride further, to Syltefjord (look for Nordfjord or Hamna in the maps) from there you can arrange with private boat transport (google arctic cabin, and talk to them) to Hamningberg. From Hamningberg you can ride to Vardø, and from there against Vadsø. remember to stop at Ekkerøy. After Vadsø you will soon arrive in saami country. Everything will be the same, but the roadsigns will have dual languages, and the local people will have a tendency to be a tad shorter ICON_WINK

As you probably have understood, I am from the Varanger area. I dont reside there currently, but can probably answer any more questions you may have.

Hi Stefan. That sounds like an amazing trip. I hadn't even noticed the road to Syltefjord, and certainly wouldn't have found out about the private boat transport to Hamningberg. This way I can see more of the Varanger Peninsula. Great! Thanks!

At some point I will need to catch the Hurtigruten back to where I book the return flight from (I am still to decide where that will be). This way, I am flexible and can catch the Hurtigruten from Båtsfjord, Vardø or Vadsø, or even Kirkenes, depending on how much time I have.

On a different note, you mentioned headwinds. My experience this year when I cycled to the North Cape from Bodø, was that all winds were head winds, and they were strong. Is this the same up on the Varanger Peninsula. A lot of the route above has a southerly component. Does the wind usually come from the north/north east, or does is usually follow the coast, so I can expect a head wind on the route, for example, from Hamningberg to Vadsø?

Thanks a lot for your suggestions! I am really motivated to reach Nordkapp with time to spare so I can cycle your suggested route!! :-)

The prevailing wind direction is from the north and north east, but its not windy all the time, like in bodø.
There is a joke about bodø and winds; " one time when there where absolutely no wind in Bodø, two sheep where blown out on the sea".
I did not mean to scare you, just to warn you.
You should not be expecting wind all the time, but you should be prepared that it might happen, and when the wind is northly it will be cold (5-12°c).
It is a nice trip, and I believe you will have a great time. I would reccomend return flight from kirkenes, but the road to Kirkenes is not all that exciting. Transport from vadsø might be a good idea.

Thanks for the advice. I think Kirkenes would be a good plan. I can go there at the end of my trip with the Hurtigruten, catching it from wherever I am at the time.

I am relieved to hear that the winds may not always be the strong head winds I learned to know and love on my trip this year.. And I am looking forward to exploring the far north some more!

Thanks!

Thanks, all, for your tips!!
I have updated my Norwegian leg with an excursion on that Varanger peninsula.
http://lambchopeindhoven.wordpress.com/biking-2013/norway-2013/

It would also be great to explore the other far north peninsulas. I have already explored a bit of the Northkyn peninsula in 2012, but am interested in suggestions for getting boats between the other peninsulas (of which I don’t know the name). For example from Repvåg to the peninsula opposite, and from that peninsula to the Northkyn peninsula, and from further down the Northkyn peninsula across to the Varanger peninsula.

Are there any private people that would be able to take me from one place to another (if I pay them, of course)? These other peninsulas look cool, especially the one opposite from Repvåg.

Any tips! :-)

With only a few days to go before I leave from Holland towards the North Cape in Norway, I have put together all the stuff that I want to take. It is all rather daunting.

Here is a list of what I will be taking:
http://arctic-cycler.com/2013/06/04/my-equipment-list-for-eindhoven-nordkapp-2013/

Have I forgotten anything?

"Long sleeve inner layer for upper body"

I strongly suggest this should be wool, for instance a 200g/m2 Merino wool quality is perfect for the summer months. Keeps you warm also when wet and doesn't stink like synthetic ones.

Also, mosquito repellent is a must!

Edit: I now saw you had it on the list.

Mosquito head net/hat, rather then a spare tire.

You can change the plastic sheet for the tent bottom, with a piece of Tyvek that you should be able to scrounge of a DIY builders shop or at a building site. Lightweight, waterproof, breathable and noiseless. I would also bring a small backpack for walking around town or for excursions on foot. Good luck with your trip.

Another thing that I find handy to bring along on trips is a handful of 1-liter zip-lock plastic bags - the type you use when bringing along liquids as carry-on luggage on airplanes. They keep electronics and matches dry, and are great for storing sandwiches, left-over dinner etc. and organizing smaller accessories.

Hope you get nice weather and a great trip!! Enjoy! ICON_SMILE

Hey. Thanks!
The compact bag is indeed useful. Its packed! :-)

Good tip with the zippable plastic bags. I have a couple containing the thermarest repair kit. I can imagine that they could come in handy. :-)

You too, have a great summer!
