WHAT MOUNTAIN BIKE (UK) writes in its november 2005 issue:Julie is the entry-level brake of MAGURAs extended family of hydraulic anchors, and for the money you're getting a lot of brake. Physically the calliper itself is abig rough-cast lump, but it's a single piece and there's no flex or excessive sponginess however hard you you squeeze the chunky alloy lever.
With the 180mm/160mm disc combo we tried giving plenty of easy anchorage. The wavey rotor pattern means a bit of warble and pulse, but you'll soon get used to it, and it does genuinely seem to help pad cleaning for a consistent bite.
The brakes take a while to bed in and you need to avoid really wet conditions until the pads harden up, but they'll repay patience with a decent liefespan and no heat problems whatsoever. You'll need pliers to to whip the the pads in and out, though.
But, apart from that, setup is easy on the slotted mount and they use mineral oil, which is much kinder on paint and skin than DOT fluids. Overall bulk mean the whole setup is relatively heavy and utilitarian looking , but per performance per pound makes them a great budget choice.
WMB VERDICT:
Patient setup delivers hydraulic control and power at a great price.
Performance 7/10
Value 9/10
Julie gets the 'Value' distinction.
