hi. sadly, i am american (1/4 norwegian, family name Ogg) with NO Norwegian language skills. sorry for the english post... i am trying to plan a trip over in mid to late august or september. perhaps alone, perhaps with a friend or two...yet to be decided. it would be a ten day to two week stay. would have a car, probably drive over from stockholm. what would be the top places for me to ride within a few hours drive of Oslo? Are there any good bike "events" during that time? I would love to hook up with some locals for some guided rides (beers of choice for compensation!) I'd also be very willing to trade my locals knowledge for Colorado. The Crankworx festival that is in the U.S. is held in my hometown.... crankworx colorado
also, are there any good rentals available in the oslo area? (good 5 inch +, full suspension bikes)

Takk

Hi,

a bunch of us will be at Skeikampen (Lillehammer) August 13-16, which has wonderful riding given good weather.

Zoom in a bit to see the trails

...and August 20-23 there will be a big happening at Kongsberg

What kind of biking are you thinking of? There's a lot of nice singletrack just outside of Oslo Metropolitan area, acessible by metro/bus.

Take a look at this also for lots of info!

i have a 6 inch full suspension bike. not really a downhiller (i.e. don't wear armor, don't do any big drops), but i like to ride most anything else. ride a race series in the states during the summer, but i'm no rock star. what kind of riding is going on at kongsberg? how far from oslo?

I haven't been to Kongsberg myself so I don't know the quality of the place, but they have DH-biking as well as lots of singletrack. The event in August is mostly for trail riders I guess. The idea is to use the lift to take the riders up the mountain and then ride the trails up there.

I would say the majority of the people riding trails here use full suspension bikes with 4 or 6-inch travel. But I don't know anything about renting bikes... Someone else will have to fill you in on that one.

(Kongsberg is about an hours drive from Oslo.)

In Norway we have the ancient "All men`s right of passage"-law, which basically means you can ride everywhere as long as your trailside manners are good.
The most developed riding areas are in eastern Norway(Oslo-area is somewhat flat), but
the most spectacular riding in Norway is found on the west- and northern coast where lush birch and pine forests delve from the alpine fells into the fjords.

But there are not many mountain bikers, so a lot of the riding on the west- and northerne coast remains unexplored. The most explored areas are around the towns of Tromsø, Bodø, Ålesund, Ørsta, Stryn, and Bergen, all far from Oslo (7-15hr drive/ 1hr plane).
For a once-in-a-lifetime-trailriding-experience I would contact this guy Morten Kragebakk who is trying to set up a guiding service in the Sunnmøre area.

If you would like to ride in different areas renting a car and driving along the west coast is the best option, I`ll be more than happy to help you with which maps to buy and draw in the routes of the best west coast rides if you come by Bergen.

Renting 5"-bikes will be a problem as few entrepreneurs are developing bicycling tourism, and those who do are either insanely expensive or concentrate on the "couch-slaughter"-audience.

Morten is a real enthusiast, and I remember him talking about this several years ago (before he moved to Sunnmøre). Given that there is no place on earth as beautifull as Sunnmøre when the weather is good, it is well worth a try.

Unfortunately, I think you are a bit too late for the strawberry season. The Valldal area is well known for their berries in that part of the country.

How much time will you spend here? Norway is a stretched out country and it takes time to get around. If you are staying for, lets say a week, and your ambition is to ride a lot then I would stay around Oslo and do daytrips around. There are a lot of guides here, and If you can make it around mid-august then I am sure you can catch a ride up to Skeikampen as well.

If your ambition is to see fantastic scenery then you need to drive a lot more and ride less. The west coast is amazing, but less accessible.

This may be somewhat misguiding. Few, if any, areas in Norway are flat by, say, danish or dutch standards. Less spectacular and flat compared to the west coast: sure enough. In fact the dense populated areas around the capitol have huge, hilly forest areas that due to the long traditions for outdoor recreational life in Norway, have hundreds of kilometeres (and more) of splendid single track. A daytrip in Oslos Nordmarka will take you up and down trails with and altiude difference of up to three hundred metres, and should satiate your appetite for both climbs and descents.
In the town of Drammen just outside Oslo and on the way to Kongsberg, there's a chairlift running three days a week ( not july), with a handful og techincal descents in the skislope area and where you can find epically smooth trails winding down the hillside to sea level 500 metres below. You will also find a bike-rental at equally epical prices.
As for the western norwegian riding, I can only say it looks awesome.

WOW!.....thanks for all the input. i was on my way back to the states from dublin over the last day, so i had not checked in on the site. REALLY appreciate all the replies. i need to get back home and start working on a couple friends to see if i can get then motivated. if not, i will go it alone. most likely i would fly into stockholm (free for me and it guarantees my bike gets over from the states unharmed) and rent a car for a couple weeks. i know i would be driving a bit, but it is also a good way to get to see some of the countryside. i will certainly be trying to make one of the suggested "get togethers"...so far it sounds like there is Skeikampen in mid august, Kongsberg a week or so later, and Sunnmøre the first weekend in sept. perhaps i can stretch it out and make a couple of those. keep the info and recommendations coming....especially any bike rental (i will definitely bring mine, but others may choose to rent) or if anyone wants to make a little cash in these times :-) if anybody is getting over to the states this summer and wants to ride colorado, just drop me a line i'd be happy to give advice or a little guiding. i am excited about getting this put together. i tried a few other european sites and did not get much reply.....i heard that the norwegians were great about offering help and really into their riding. seems pretty true!
on a COMPLETELY unrelated note....does anyone have an idea about tracing a norwegian family name? i would like to find out where that side of my family resided in norway.
cheers.

To put "flat" in perspective, most of the mountains in norway are Colorado foothill sized or less. We have little alpine landscape, much more glacial landskape. This of course makes it more ideal for mtb's and such.

I think you have to have visited the Rockies to appreciate what big mountains really are. In Norway we a rightly proud of all our mountains. But our highest mountains are far lower the the highest in Europe, let alone the US

Hei Bull D, I'm from spain and i am living in Norway 3 years and i can recomend you a little bit,if your plan is to ride singletrack and a litle tourism, I'll recomend you that pass max. 3-4 days in Oslo, riding around in the moornings and visiting the city in the evenings, after that, move to the west and visit Bergen and Trondheim ( another 3-4 days riding around in each place). You have to count also the driving and may be some tourism moments.
I agree with the people here, or course, Norway is beutiful but doesn't have BIG montains, like France, Italy,or Spain. But has very nice singletracks, with a good combination of rocks and roots and a very cool gripy ground.

Also you have to think in two very important things that noone say here, Norway is very very expensive country, get ready for that: food, gasoline, highways, ferrys restaurants, tobacco and of course beers. Not less important if you gonna rent a car is the roads in NOrway are very bad and you drive very slow, so in a sort distance you employ double of time that normally. Think in that for your planification.

I think that your friends they gonna have some problems for to rent good proper bikes, is a good idea to bring it here in the plane.

Also is interesting if you like DH and Bikeparks try Hafjell, many people say that is and amazing bike park for all kind of levels, and a lot of sigletrack. And they rent very cool bikes and the equipment that you need.

I hope that the spanish touch, help you a little.

Bergen also got a couple of smooth trails everything from nice, flat single track over Vidden to downhill trails down Voss and Ulriken. And I'm sure it will be easy to find someone whos willing to guide you here.

Bergen will also be a good half way stop on your way to Sunnmøre. A good route would be Skeikampen (and Hafjell not too far away) - Oslo/Kongsberg - Bergen - Sunnmøre - Trondheim. The distances covered on that trip isn't to bad (http://tinyurl.com/qgk79a), and the roads are okay. Especially from Bergen to Sunnmøre and over to Trondheim there's a lot of spectacular views. From Trondheim you can also drive back in to Sweden and visit for example Åre (http://saabsalomonavalanchetrophy.com/uk/events/are-presentation.html) on your way back to Stockholm.

I spent a few weeks in your "area" this spring. All my riding was on the western slope (Fruita, Grand Junction ++) and Utah. I wanted to check out Golden, Boulder etc, but a snowstorm cancelled those plans.

It is difficult to compare riding over there with riding in Norway, since it is so different (I love them both). In Norway you have to work much more for the reward, both physical and technical skills will be put to a test. Be prepared for slippery conditions, tires that work well over there might give no traction on wet norwegian trails. Especially in Utah riding in the rain seemed like no option, here you pretty much have too. Keep that in mind when packing. While riding in Colorado seems to be up up up and dooooown, riding in most parts of Norway is up down up down, but by no means flat.

Here is a rough itinerary for an epic roadtrip that I would envy you alot click Roughly the same as alot of other people have suggested, but I left out Oslo and Bergen since I believe the most epic riding is in the mountains (Skeikampen) or north western coast (Sunnmøre)

More than 1300 miles means alot of money in gas (gas could be as much as 7-8 $ a gallon, depending on the exchange rate). You might also find that two weeks is too short time.

With less than two weeks I would recommend you make a choice of either Sunnmøre/Trondheim/Åre or Oslo/Drammen/Jotunheimen. Jotunheimen is Norways biggest mountainrange, best places to ride are Hafjell or Skeikampen (where the meet will be).

Both options will have excellent riding, but Sunnmøre will probably be more epic.

Btw, if you are renting a car it might be cheaper too fly to Oslo/Trondheim. You would be able to get by without a car when in the cities, riding is accesible from city centre either by public transport or by simply riding your bike. And for day trips I am sure someone would give you a ride.

Aight, hope this is of help. I think all of us will be very jealous if you make this happen.

While I'd second a lot of the comments about getting out into the Northwest for some really epic riding, if you are limited by time or transport costs, you shouldn't feel that you'll be missing out if you end up having to stick to the areas around the larger cities. I moved to Norway four years ago, and I have to say that even the trails around Oslo (most of which are easily accessible within about 20 minutes of the centre of the city) are among the best I've ever ridden - most of them are fairly technical compared to what you'd generally find in my native UK, but within that there's still plenty of variation. Rooty, rocky, fast, smooth, tight, open, singletrack - pretty much anything a serious trail rider could ask for. It's a hell of a place to be a mountain biker, really.

You could try The Digital Archives.. It is a public service from the National Archives of Norway. Here you can search in transcribed source material for free.

Norwegian emigrants used to come through Ellis Island, so you might find something there.

There is also a (quite cheap) program called Familiy Heritage that my father recommends.

Good luck searching for your relatives. I don't know how norwegians generally treat american relatives. If it is half as good as how my american relatives treats my family, it should be great.

hey marley,
thanks for the info and recommendations. i live about 3 hours from the area you were riding. lots of fun. i actually much prefer it too the much more "famous" moab riding. the "up-down, up-down" riding sounds really good to me. the long, crushing ups in colorado aren't always made up by the downs!
it is going to be a little bit of time before i commit to a specific plan, but i am MOST DEFINITELY coming that way in aug/sept. you are probably right about the flying into oslo, but i can get to stockholm free and just as important...no restrictions on shipping my bike and it will no get damaged. i already checked into a car for a couple weeks. skeikampen and sunnmore sound like really good options. thanks.

There are many excellent single tracks around Trondheim, and I am sure there will be locals willing to guide you while you are here. I am certainly willing if I have time. You could also consider stopping by Trollheimen on the way to Trondheim (if you are passing by of course). Nerskogen - Jøldalshytta is excellent, see pictures here and here. I can provide a route description.

Consider checking out Gesunda Bike Park in Sweden on the way. There is some info in English here and in Norwegian here. Also try googling Gesundaberget.
