Actually, you don't need the "ernie" with the OPI stem. It's more necessary with the SI stem. The bottom half of the OPI stem/steerer can be used to remove the upper half if you unscrew the bottom half almost fully leaving enough threads engaged to keep from damaging them when you use a mallet to tap the bottom half. You should have a good bit of the bottom half exposed with plenty of threads still seated. Use a rubber mallet to tap the bottom half up until the top half is exposed vs. the bottom half. Then unthread and remove the bottom half and the top should be easy by hand. This method is far better than using a maglite or PVC which will almost certainly damage the inner threads of the top half of the OPI stem.
